Produce Expert
Dan Avakian
Hello I’m Dan the Produce Man. Summer means fresh fruit and vegetables on your plate.
About 50 miles east of the Bay Area, the Brentwood growing area is home to some of California’s finest fresh produce. I love driving out to pick up the day’s harvest for my store. There’s nothing like placing a
sign over a display that reads
“Fresh Picked This Morning.”

Harvest Time in Brentwood
Brentwood brings us Super Sweet yellow and white corn, plus a special local variety that is guaranteed to stay sweet up to seven days after harvest called “Brentwood Diamonds.” You’ll also find peaches, nectarines, plums, pluots, green beans, and Italian beans. |

All Ears—Summer Corn
Stock up on the dental floss—corn season is here! Corn is grown commercially in 30 states, and can be found year-round in many grocery stores. But nothing compares to the fresh local varieties that grace the markets and roadside stands during the peak season. |

Gold Kiwi—Exotic, Tasty, and Nutritious
For more than 40 years, New Zealand’s green kiwifruit has been celebrated here in the US for its exotic flavor and exceptional nutritional value. In recent years, the lesser-known—but equally delectable—gold kiwi has caught the attention of US buyers. Grown by Zespri of New Zealand, the gold kiwi has been available in the US during the summer months since 1998, both conventionally and organically grown. |
